House of Black Lanterns Announces Kill The Lights

2013 sees the galvanised launch of House of Black Lanterns, the latest artistic guise of Dylan Richards (formerly known as King Cannibal when working on Ninja Tune and Zilla on Warp Records). This new incarnation delivers a defined change in vision and style with the material already receiving widespread support including first airings on dBridge’s Rinse FM show. Retaining the earlier influence of DJ Krust’s sprawling drum & bass soundscapes, House of Black Lanterns sees Richards develop his sound to incorporate the dub-inflected techno textures of Rhythm & Sound whilst nodding to the catchy, yet occasionally bleak floorfillers of Trax, all inspired by the modern noir visual style of Michael Mann.

His 11-track Kill The Lights album is a masterpiece in genre-weaving, tied together by poignant emotional and effortless force. ‘Names’ featuring Leni Ward and ‘Shot You Down’, co-written by Alpines’ Catherine Pockson, pack a softer punch; heavy on the intricate production but lighter on the dark atmospherics. ‘The Walls Are Closing In’ and ‘You, Me, Metropolis’ reconvene in the tripped-out, skittering techno basement where the preceding EP, Truth & Loss, begins, with Richards combining all of these disparate elements with ease; his sound simultaneously dark and startlingly original.

Truth & Loss properly sets the tone for House of Black Lanterns with its epic dystopian darkness, licked by off-beat techno shuffles. Trinidad & Tobago’s finest emcee Juakali appears on primal ‘Like A Warrior’, Astrophonica owner, Fracture, warps the title track and House Of Black Lanterns permeates Ghettozoid’s ‘Boy Toy’ with haunting emptiness on the flip.

Truth & Loss will be released on 12" vinyl on 8th April 2013 with the digital release on 1st April. The Kill The Lights album will be released on April 29th on 2LP, CD and digital. You can pre-order your copies here.

If you order vinyl from the fabric or Houndstooth stores you'll also receive the WAV files for free upon release. Pre-orders will be charged at a discounted rate of £7 (£6 for fabricfirst members) for the 12" single or CD album, or grab the gatefold double LP, as always mastered by Matt Colton and cut on 180g vinyl, for an advance price of £17 (£14 for fabricfirst members).
