NEW SIGNING: Hear Marquis Hawkes' debut release on Houndstooth

Meet our latest signing, Marquis Hawkes! That is, 'meet' him in the loosest sense, he is infrequently interviewed and even more rarely photographed, not to engineer intrigue or mystique, but in order to be judged as an artist solely by his musical output, rather than his words or pictures.

With a string of well-received 12"s on the likes of Dixon Avenue Basement Jams, Clone and Crème Organization under his belt, Marquis Hawkes brings a (perhaps slightly overdue!) house angle to the Houndstooth table. And on his debut for the label, 'Fifty Fathoms Deep', he comes good with four upfront house jams, each demonstrating a different side to Hawkes’ production talent, take in jazz-inflected deepness, disco flavours, quirky cyberpop through to futuristic funk. Think Prince meets Neneh Cherry, held hostage by Gene Hunt’s relentless 909 selections.

FACT premiere the lead track, the infectious 'Can’t Find A Reason', describing Hawkes as an "excellent house producer."

UPDATE: Mixmag have just posted the "raucous analogue funk" (their words!) of the B2 track, 'Fat Man'. Check it out here

UPDATE #2: XLR8R have shared the B1 track from which the EP takes its title, 'Fifty Fathoms', saying it "brings together cut-up soulful vocals, mellow, jazzy chords, and the shuffling drum grooves of early New York house." Listen here

UPDATE #3: Boiler Room have the final premiere of the EP, sharing 'The Way', featuring Stee Downes, which is Marquis' first production with a featured vocalist! "We're feeling it for sure!" they say...
